Thom, you sure know how to throw a party! Who would have thought on a Friday
night you could get 50 of your closest friends together at one of the shadiest,
most dive-iest (I made that word
up) bars in Hollywood? Well Thom
did, and it turned out to be one of the best parties I’ve attended all year.  Who says you need the best of the best for a memorable night?

Thom is my good friend and a wardrobe
stylist from Los Feliz, CA. He threw his birthday party last week at a lil’ hole in the wall in
Hollywood. Not only did he choose
a super creative and unexpected space for his party,
but he had the place looking
perfectly busted thanks to his friend, designer Paul Martin. Paul operates a company called F*ckd Up
& Janky. He also has a cool
site called When You Sleep I Dream which describes his approach to art and
design.

It’s kinda hard to show in pictures and even harder to
describe how captivating decorating ugly can be. The decorations looked liked a bomb went off in a party
store warehouse. There were
streamers tangled with ribbons that were mixed in with balloons, and Halloween
decorations that cascaded down the bar.
If those weren’t enough, Paul added ticker tape, foil and old Christmas
decorations. Right now you’re
cringing, right? Trust me, it all
came together in perfect harmony – truly, it was a work of art.

The centerpiece of the design was this ugly chandelier
formation made from white balloons. I could not stop staring at it all night. Here in La-La Land where it’s
look-good-or-stay-home, what a refreshing idea it is to design opposite to that
notion. The next time you throw a
party, you might concentrate less on making everything perfect and shoot for
something a little more janky.
