In a recent survey among some of my closest friends we all concluded that we hate our clothes. Check this out. Last week I was doing laundry—one of my favorite pastimes—and while as I was folding I realized I really don’t have anything to wear. 95% of my clothes could be mistaken for rags or gym clothes, and the other 5% ARE gym clothes! So where does that leave me?
Frankly, I’m tired of having to look through all my bad clothes whenever I need to put on something nice – such a waste of time and so stressful. When I do finally find something to wear I end up with a big old pile of clothes on the floor. Clothes I will never wear. Why do I keep them?
The big question becomes how do you start to get rid of them?
Do “The Closet Study”!
This study on your closet will take one month, but it will be worth your time. Simply place every piece of clothing you own on a hanger in your closet. Then make sure all the hangers face the same direction. Easy. Then go on about your life, and the next time you launder or dry clean a piece of clothing, hang it back in your closet, turning the hanger to the opposite direction. Cut to a month later. Take a look at your closet, and you will be able to identify what you haven’t worn. Those are the items you will get rid of.
You can do the same with your dressers if you’re not a closet guy or girl. Try to migrate all your dresser items into one drawer, and as you wear items, move them into a new drawer. The proof will be in the pudding – actually in your dresser.
Does one month seem like not enough time to decide? Okay, extend the Closet Study to six months—twelve months should be the max though. Trust me, if you haven’t worn something in a year, you’re not going to. Purge them and it’ll be so much easier to locate the gems in your wardrobe faster.
Until next time, I Dare You To Be Domestic.
