I have a built-in bathroom cabinet that is quite the eyesore. It’s big, white, in the way, and right smack over my toilet.
Despite its unfortunate placement, it’s always been on my mind to do something creative with it. I finally found inspiration: The Inside-out bathroom cabinet from FreshWest Design made up of Welsh duo Markus Beck and Simon Macro. Its design won the 2007 ELLE Decoration British Design Award for Best in Bathrooms.
Here’s the Dare To Be Domestic cool ass crafts way to transform your eyesore storage solutions into works of art:
- Prime and paint your cabinet with a base color that complements your room. This will be your first of two colors. The primer you choose must match the paint you choose. So if you choose a latex primer, your paint should be latex too (as opposed to oil-based). Paint comes in a variety of sheens including flat, satin, semi-gloss and high gloss. For furniture it’s best to use a satin or semi-gloss finish. Why not go daring with your color—you’re creating a piece of art!
- Grab a piece of paper and sketch out the design you want to transpose onto your cabinet.
- Using a pencil, sketch that same design on your fixture.
- Lastly with a small tip brush and second paint color, create the outlines for your art. I recommend using an oil-based paint for longevity and quality.
I’ll be posting my cabinet transformation as soon as I finish, so check back. Below is my preliminary sketch. Now that’s a cool ass craft!
