Today’s “How You Living” is dedicated to keeping it real. Yes, we all know it’s all fun and inspiring to look at cool, trendy and uber-stylish homes filled with things you may not be able to afford to get inspired. But what if I flip the scrip and show you a “real” home that needs a little TLC to get you inspired on what NOT to do. Kinda like reverse psychology. So I proudly present to Troy and his Germantown, Maryland basement studio apartment. OOHHH AHHHH!
Many of you may know that Troy is my brother from reading past posts. Troy is a very talented barber and graphic artist. But I must have taken all the domestic genes, because his house is well… Let’s have a little fun!
Notice the unique use of space or shoe storage. Um, yea, that’s a little out of the way. How exactly does he reach those shoes tucked atop a 7 feet tall cabinet?
True to a bachelor pad, notice the football memorabilia so neatly stored and preserved. I’m actually really impressed.
Aren’t flat panel TVs supposed take up less space? For those of you who have a flat panel TV on an over-sized table I’m here to tell you: “Hell-to-the-nah!” Either mount the dang thing or find a slim console table. Then tuck your cable box and DVD player out of site.
Should your coffee table be bigger than your sofa? Let me think. No! Troy could scale back on his coffee table by replacing it with a small movable end table.
I could go on and on, but here’s Troy talking about his apartment in his own words:
1. What’s your favorite room in your house? Why?
I guess I could say all of them because my basement apartment is one big room. But the bathroom is the coolest because you can hear conversations from everyone in the building and it also holds the most heat.
2. What’s the proudest purchase or most expensive item in your home?
The proudest items in my apartment are my wardrobe closet because it hides all my junk and transforms my studio apartment into a one bedroom AND my full size bed because I was able to get it for free for helping a friend move her items into storage.
3. If you could choose anyone in the world to be roommates with, who would it be? Why?
My good fried and college alum Stephan (aka 32nd named after the street in NY City.) Stephan is an amazing artist and we would have the coolest apartment ever, full of original art and murals.
4. Complete the sentence:
My sofa is _______ because _______.
My sofa is NOT ONE OF A KIND because I BOUGHT IT AT IKEA.
5. What’s your favorite music to cook or clean to?
I have two. It’s NERD’s first album “In Search of” and Kanye West’s “Graduation.” They are both so motivational.
6. In regards to your home, finish this phrase: I can’t live without my BOSE iPod speaker console, because my MAC speakers are trash!
Thanks Troy for showing us How You Living.
