I can’t tell you her real name, but she’s fabulous and super resourceful. She’s worked for some of the biggest names in Hollywood from investment moguls to stars of Charlie’s Angels and other leading actors. She’s truly “Housekeeper to the Stars,” so we’ll call her Joan. LOL!
Although money is not an issue for her clients, Joan has several shortcuts that save her clients big bucks. Here are some tips:
1. Don’t use glass cleaner on windows.
Joan on cleaning windows: “I clean windows differently from other glass around the house. For windows I only use water. I use two rags, one that is barely damp which I use to wash with, and the other I use to dry with. For high fingerprint-traffic areas like mirrors and tabletops, I use glass cleaner. I am very picky on the type of glass cleaner I use—my choice is Glass Cleaner by Sprayaway. It sprays on easy, doesn’t run, cleans to perfection and smells great! You can find Sprayaway Glass Cleaner at stores like Costco and Smart & Final.”
2. Use a little water with your furniture cleaner.
Joan on furniture cleaner: “I love Pledge. But I have my own way of using it – with a lil’ water. Never spray your Pledge directly on the surface. Instead, spray it on a barely damp rag. Then rub the rags together so the cleaner is not concentrated in one spot. Now wipe down your furniture. This technique will make your wood surface look clean without leaving glossy streaks that look artificial on antique pieces. Most of my clients have very high-end wood pieces that don’t work with that high gloss lacquered look. By the way, this same technique works on marble, wood, and leather.”
Joan on mopping: “I make my own mops. I use a soft white towel with a hole cut in the middle wrapped around my broom. You’d be surprised how much lint and residue regular store mops distribute. Simply wet your towel with water and cleaner of choice in your basin, ring it dry and wrap around your broom. You get great scrubbing action, and the mop is so easy to clean when you’re done—just wash the towel with some bleach, pop in the dryer and its ready for the next time.”
