Nothing says “Party’s Over!” like a red wine stain on your sofa, shirt, rug—or on any fabric for that matter. It’s only December 10th and I’ve already attended two Holiday parties and spilled spinach dip on one of my favorite shirts. Not a good look! With more holiday parties approaching in the coming weeks, be ready. Here are some of my favorite “on the go” methods for stain removal:
The “Nightmare” Stain – Red Wine
- Immediately pour white wine on the stain. Trust me
- Blot the stain with paper towels.
- Sponge with warm water to dilute the stain. Blot again.
- Apply talcum powder to any remaining stain. If you don’t have powder, salt will do. Let the powder or salt stand for three minutes.
- Gently brush off the talcum powder or salt. Repeat sponging and blotting if stain persists.
THe “Oh *uck” Stain – Greasy Food Stains
- Place detergent directly on the stain and let it sit for a few minutes.
- Rinse.
- Wash the garment as you normally would.
Or
- Lightly spray WD-40 on the stain and let it sit. (You know the lubricant stuff.)
- Launder garment as usual.
The “I Am Such An Idiot” Stain - Miscellaneous Foods
- Remove excess food.
- Saturate the stain with club soda.
- Blot with dry towel.
- Repeat if necessary.
Things You Should Know
- Stains should be treated as soon as possible to avoid damage to the fabric—the longer it remains, the more difficult it is to remove.
- When doing stain removal at home, work slowly and check your work frequently throughout the procedure.
- Change your cleaning rag often for best results.
- Use the hottest water your hands can handle.
